Aside from the usual — bottles that exceed the three ounces limit, pocket knives, foreign fruit, etc. — there are many more, and many strange, items that don’t make it through security. A new photo exhibit by photographer Taryn Simon entitled Contraband showcases 1,075 items, from the typical to the extremely unusual, that were stopped as they tried to make their way from other countries through New York’s JFK Airport. The photos will make up a book that publishes in the fall in conjunction with the exhibit that will open in Beverly Hills in September. In the meantime, The New York Times has published 40 of the photos which are available for viewing online.

To continually provide our Customers and Crewmembers with unique experiences in T5 and to celebrate New Orleans’ Jazz Fest, we will host a Live from T5 concert performance today, Thursday, April 29 from 5-7 pm with the High and Mighty Brass Band. The band hails from New Orleans and boasts a mix of classic New Orleans Funk, R&B, Afro-Beat and Hip Hop. Join us for the performance at the south grandstand in the marketplace.

Last year, we launched Live from T5, a six-month, 12-day concert series featuring emerging musical artists from around the U.S. The series created a lot of excitement so be sure to keep an eye out for more entertainment to come!

Some of you may have noticed a new piece of ground equipment out on the ramp at JFK. We’ve purchased a new utility truck for use by our Technical Operations team. The MILES work truck is currently in use and is the most powerful “fleet” electric utility truck on the market. This vehicle, manufactured by the MILES Company, made its debut in 2007 and was given the “Electric Car Company of 2007” award by Good Clean Technologies. These vehicles, built on steel unibody chassis, are the worlds first crash tested electric vehicles to achieve the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), California Air Resources Board and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) compliance.

By driving the MILES electric vehicles, we are reducing our hydrocarbon footprint and reducing our consumption of fuel and oil. Over the course of just one year, we are preventing thousands of pounds of emissions and the use of hundreds of gallons of gasoline. The truck is governed to a maximum speed of 25 miles an hour and travels 50-60 miles on a charge. It is easily charged at any standard 110V outlet and has an estimated battery life of 25,000 miles. It uses an advanced three phase, brushless, AC induction motor which comes standard with regenerative braking.

In the future, we plan to continue to be a good environmental neighbor by purchasing additional vehicles for use.

Stop by T5 at JFK this month to check out the groundbreaking ICON A5! This innovative aircraft is a clean sheet design based on the FAA’s new Light Sport Aircraft category and new Sport Pilot License, new rules that make recreational flying more accessible than ever before.. We are all very excited to bring the A5 to JFK and showcase it in the T5 Marketplace through March 28, as the first stop on the model’s multi-city tour.

You can find the A5 in the T5 Marketplace, near the low grandstand, next to the engine. The A5 will be displayed on a stand, with its wings folded most of the time (primarily for safety reasons). Video screens and an interactive kiosk will be available for customers to learn more about the aircraft and see it in flight.

The ICON A5 is amphibious, seats two, and has folding wings that allow it be trailered like a wakeboard boat. It was created by an unprecedented collaboration between expert automotive designers and some of the best aviation engineers in the world. The public response since its launch has been humbling; numerous tv appearances including The Today Show, Discovery Channel and CNBC; numerous magazines including the cover of Popular Science, a feature story in Wired, and the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book; and numerous design awards including the prestigious IDEA Gold Award. Most telling are the 371 orders, totaling over $55 million, and selling out the first two years of production.

ICON Aircraft is raising a large round of capital this spring for manufacturing setup on the A5.

You can learn about the A5 on ICON’S website at iconaircraft.com
